Premier League: West Brom 1 Fulham 1

Maarten Stekelenburg s late error spoiled Felix Magath s bow as Fulham manager as the visitors were held to a 1-1 draw by West Brom.

Stekelenburg initially pulled off a number of fine saves to keep Fulham ahead, but proved to be the villain of the piece as he allowed substitute Matej Vydra s shot to squirm under him and roll narrowly over the line with four minutes to go.

It had looked as though Magath was going to be indebted to a familiar face in Ashkan Dejagah, who won the Bundesliga title with the German in 2008-09 in his spell at Wolfsburg and put Fulham ahead after 28 minutes.

But the Premier League s bottom club were denied a first win in seven league games when Stekelenburg blotted his copybook in the closing stages.

The result leaves Fulham four points a…

Maxi Pereira ´privileged´ to make Uruguayan history

Maxi Pereira is set to make Uruguayan football history on Thursday when the nation take on Venezuela in the Copa America Centenario.

Pereira is in line to earn his 113th international cap for the Uruguay, which will make him the all-time appearance holder for the two-time world champions.

The Porto full-back equalled Diego Forlan s record of 112 games in their 3-1 loss to Mexico in Group C on Sunday, but will hold the outright record if he makes an appearance against Venezuela.

I feel privileged to be about to play my 113th game with the national team, the 32-year-old said.

I could have never imagined this. Not many players can make so many appearances, and I m thankful it fell to me.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez praised the veteran de…

Bundesliga Preview: Bayern Munich v Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen s chances of ending a 12-game winless run against Bayern Munich could be boosted when they meet in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Despite failing to beat Bayern since September 2008, Robin Dutt s men are in decent form and Pep Guardiola likely to rest players ahead of Tuesday s UEFA Champions league semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.

The Bavarians will need to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Real, despite dominating large swathes of their first-leg clash at the Bernabeu.

Bremen have eased any relegation worries in recent weeks by collecting seven points from the last 12 available and they only need to match Hamburg s result at Augsburg this weekend to be mathematically safe.

The Weserstadion club will also have revenge on their mind, having been…

Serie A Preview: Inter v Sampdoria

Walter Mazzarri will be looking to inflict defeat on one of his former clubs when Inter host Sampdoria on Sunday.

The Inter head coach spent two years with the Genoa-based team from 2007 to 2009 earning sixth and 13th place finishes in Serie A before taking the reins at Napoli ahead of the 2009-10 campaign.

However, Mazzarri will put any sentimental feelings to one side at San Siro as he looks to extend his current side s unbeaten Serie A run to seven games.

Inter sit fourth in the table after 13 matches, but they were held 1-1 at lowly Bologna last time out.

That fixture at the Stadio Renato Dall Ara saw Inter go behind after just 12 minutes courtesy of a fine effort from Panagiotis Kone, before Jonathan Moreira levelled soon after half-time.

Mazzarri cou…

Kudos for Mohammed Kudus as West Ham boss David Moyes reflects on comeback win

David Moyes gave the kudos to Mohammed Kudus after the Ghana winger helped West Ham come from behind to beat Europa League minnows TSC Backa Topola 3-1.

The Hammers made heavy weather of the opening match of their latest European adventure on a stormy night in Stratford, but headers from £38million summer signing Kudus and substitute Tomas Soucek got the Hammers off to a winning start.

East London was hit by torrential rain before kick-off with water cascading through the roof onto the concourses at London Stadium.

Hammers, Mo has a message for you

The floodgates failed to open on the pitch in the first half, however, despite West Ham being in the rare position of dominating possession on the soggy surface, and th…

FA Cup holders Arsenal lose at Forest, Newport stun Leeds

The FA Cup third round saw another two big shocks as holders Arsenal lost at Nottingham Forest, while League Two side Newport County came from behind to knock out Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United.

Arsenal have won the tournament in three of the last four years, but were dumped out in a thrilling 4-2 defeat at the City Ground against managerless Forest, with two penalties helping the second-tier hosts through.

Newport s victory was their first in the competition against a team from England s second tier or higher since 1979 and came just 24 hours after Coventry City stunned Stoke City by the same scoreline, prompting the sacking of Mark Hughes.

League One Shrewsbury Town gave David Moyes a headache after holding West Ham United to a 0-0 draw to force a…

Makelele hopes Kante can surpass him

Claude Makelele hopes N Golo Kante can become the best holding player in the world but claimed the Chelsea midfielder has work to do if he is to perfect the position.

Former France international Makelele was widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world at the peak of his career, shielding the backline and distributing the ball to more gifted attacking team-mates with understated brilliance at Real Madrid and Chelsea.

The 43-year-old, who began his career at Nantes and also played for Marseille and Celta Vigo before retiring in 2011 after a spell with Paris Saint-Germain, was asked by UEFA s website which active player he considers to be the best in his old role.

It is a position where it is difficult to play, he said.

Guardiola taking revenge against Yaya Toure, claims agent

Yaya Toure s agent claims Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is freezing out the Ivorian midfielder to exact revenge.

Toure has only made one appearance for City this season in a Champions League play-off in August and Guardiola has vowed not to play the 33-year-old again unless he apologises for critical comments made by Dimitri Seluk.

Seluk angered Guardiola after hitting out at the Spaniard following his humiliating decision to omit Toure from City s Champions League squad.

An apology from Seluk, however, is not forthcoming, with the outspoken agent insisting the issue stems from him criticising then-Barcelona boss Guardiola for selling Toure to City in 2010.

I know what his problem is, Seluk told the Mirror. When Pep forced Yaya out of Barcelona I…

Manchester City back in for Firpo

According to reports in France, English champions Manchester City have re-entered themselves into the race to sign Junior Firpo. The 22 year old is currently enjoying his time with Spanish club Real Betis, but it seems like only a matter of time before he takes a big step up in his career.

Of course, it’s not going to be that simple for City, mainly because the other primary team that is interested is Real Madrid. Firpo may lean towards going to the Bernabeu given his experience in Spanish football, but at the same time, the influence of Pep Guardiola could cause him to alter his plans.

Firpo first turned professional back in 2015 with the Betis B team, before being promoted to the senior squad earlier this year. He’s also appeared for the Spain U21s, too, with some…

Atletico boss Simeone dismisses Europa League favourites tag

Diego Simeone refused to be drawn on the widespread belief that Atletico Madrid are the team to beat in the Europa League this season.

Atletico have been installed as favourites to win the competition ahead of their last-16 showdown with Russian league leaders Lokomotiv Moscow on Thursday.

The Spanish club have enjoyed another impressive season under Simeone – second only to Barcelona in LaLiga, while they are seven points clear of city rivals Real Madrid.

Asked about Atletico being seen as favourites to claim their third second-tier European competition title and first since 2012, head coach Simeone told reporters: It s normal that the press always wants to put a headline for every newspaper but for us what matters is tomorrow s game.

It s none of our…
